What is the Hot Club of Berlin?
The Hot Club of Berlin brings to life the timeless sound of Django Reinhardt and Stéphane Grappelli, carrying on the tradition of the legendary Quintette du Hot Club de France. Rooted in the rich heritage of Gypsy Jazz—also known as Jazz Manouche or Gypsy Swing—the all-acoustic band captures the vibrant energy and spontaneity of 1930s European string jazz.
Francisco Batista and Thomas Dekas created this collective with the finest musicians in Berlin. Each member has dedicated their musical life to mastering this craft, refining the techniques and style that made Django Reinhardt’s music so iconic in the 1930s and 40s.
Their repertoire spans from soulful ballads and smooth, mid-tempo jazz classics to the exhilarating, high-speed pieces that define the genre. In addition to the well-known standards, The Hot Club of Berlin also shines a light on Django’s lesser-known and more obscure compositions, offering fresh interpretations of these hidden gems.
With its flexible lineup, ranging from intimate trios to the full power orchestra, The Hot Club of Berlin adapts to various settings while staying true to the essence of this legendary style. Rich guitar melodies, expressive violin lines, and a driving rhythm create a sound that is both energetic and sophisticated—whether on a concert stage, in a jazz club, or at a private event.
